A – New research has determined that bees are being decimated by a chemical in some fertilizers. Water spiked with this chemical reproduced the havoc more and more commonly observed. Since farmers and fertilizer companies fully understand the agricultural importance of bees ($33 B in US and 35% of top food crops) they will readily comply with regulations designed to control these substances. Yes?
B – A wonderful article by a legendary science writer outlines the hope that Einstein’s General Relativity will be disproved this year! Not out of envy, but in order to confirm quantum effects. Unless the General Theory is disproved, then there are no macro quantum effects, i.e. cosmos scale; only atomic scale effects; and that is counter intuitive. If confirmed, the theories failure will be seen as the inevitable modification of an astonishing insight that has passed all tests for over a hundred years of unprecedented scientific progress. Don’t you admire the scientific method? What are its problems?
C – Based on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, the Supreme Court of Canada has upheld the right to strike, over provincial government attempts to declare their workers “essential”. Is this a good decision with respect to law? With respect to the publics right to enjoy essential government services?
D – Occasionally I have been so completely and embarrassed that there was nothing that I could say or do. Not Fun. I expect this happens to us all from time to time. What makes a perfect “faux pas”? How can they be avoided?
E – More and more hospitals are advertising their services, but medical atheists question weather these adds are so market-oriented that they fail to provide the balanced information that potential patients deserve. Quite often, for instance, the add appears to be impartial advice when it isn’t. Do you agree with the ethicists? Should they also look at investment advice, mortgage and loan contracts, for-profit college adds, etc?
F – Putin seems ready to go as far as he needs to in order to get his way? Is this a bluff? Should we call it? (See Hitler, but remember the bomb.)
